THROUGH THE WALLS is an autobiographical musical project by renowned klezmer fiddler and composer Anna Lowenstein. This unique concert invites audiences into Anna’s childhood home in Stamford Hill, London, where two distinct sound worlds shaped her musical identity: from one wall, the soulful chants of Hasidic prayer; from the other, the refined harmonies of her father’s string quartet rehearsals.
Blending her deep knowledge of traditional Yiddish instrumental music with a lifelong love of the classical string quartet, Anna explores her heritage through a series of original compositions. Woven throughout the programme are personal stories, ethnographic interviews, and field recordings that bring to life the rich cultural tapestry of Stamford Hill.
The performance features an ensemble of some of the UK’s most celebrated klezmer musicians: Anna Lowenstein and Flora Curzon on violins, Meg Hamilton on viola, and Francesca Ter-Berg on cello. Together, this exceptional quartet honours and reimagines the living traditions of Yiddish and Eastern European folk music, offering a moving and immersive musical experience.
